Tamara Johnston, LMSW

Hello, my name is Tamara.

I know that starting counseling isn’t always easy. I would love to help you get to where you want to be whether you are a child, family, individual or couple.

In our sessions, you’ll find a supportive space where you're truly heard. I will walk alongside you as we set meaningful goals and build a path forward.  My goal is to help you gain the tools and confidence to continue shaping the life and relationships you desire for years to come.

My 25 year background in school-based counseling has given me the privilege of guiding children and teens through the complexities of growing up—at home, in school, and in their relationships. Over time, my work has expanded to support adults and couples seeking personal growth, stronger communication, and more meaningful connections.

I’m especially passionate about helping couples, both established and those going into marriage, thrive by applying proven tools and strategies that foster connection, communication, and lasting partnership. My work is informed by the Gottman Method, a research-based approach that helps couples build the fulfilling relationship they desire.

In my work with children, teens, and young adults, I take a collaborative, strengths-based approach to help them manage stress, develop resilience, and build healthy coping strategies.

Whether working with young people or adults, my philosophy remains the same: to empower you with practical tools and insights that create new habits and build lifelong skills.

I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work - GVSU, a Master’s in Education - GVSU, and a certification as a Mastery Level Coach. These diverse qualifications and my own growth journey have led to my client-centered, empathetic approach to healing and growth.

I would love to help you get where you want to be.
